Do Not Despise the Small Beginnings: Preaching to Myself

3 healthy plants beginning to grow

As Christian entrepreneurs, the path to realizing your dreams often starts with small, seemingly insignificant, and slow steps. In a world where it seems things can “go viral” overnight, it can be tempting to become frustrated and miss the sweetness of the early, humble beginnings. Remember that every thread in the tapestry of God’s great plan for our lives started somewhere; frankly, it’s a process. A story. It’s a lifetime.

The Biblical Perspective on Small Beginnings

Zechariah 4:10 (ESV) says, “For who has despised the day of small things? These seven eyes of the Lord, which range through the whole earth, will rejoice when they see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.”

Zerubbabel was tasked with rebuilding the temple, a monumental challenge that involved starting from scratch, yet God reassured him that this small beginning was crucial to a larger plan.

This passage offers profound encouragement. God does not dismiss your efforts, no matter how modest they seem. He sees the potential in every small step and is delighted when you take faithful action, even if the results are not immediately impressive. Celebrate your small wins with Him!

Some Ideas to Embrace About Your Small Start

  • Foundation for Growth

The beginning is the foundation upon which growth is built. Just as a skyscraper requires a solid foundation to reach towering heights, your entrepreneurial endeavors must take root and begin from somewhere. Each baby step lays the groundwork for future success, so while your early efforts might not show rapid growth, they are still paving the way for great achievements.

  • Cultivating Faithfulness

Starting anything worth having requires a great deal of faith and persistence. It’s easy to remain motivated when things are going well, but the true test of character comes when you work hard and have little to show for it. We learn to rely on God’s timing and trust He is at work, even when we can’t see immediate results. This season is what will set you apart because perseverance prepares you for more responsibilities and blessings in the future.

  • Learning and Refinement

The early stages of entrepreneurship provide invaluable opportunities for learning and refinement. Every challenge you face and each mistake you make help you grow as a leader and a business owner. As you test ideas, refine strategies, and gain insights vital for long-term success, phrase these as“opportunities for growth” rather than obstacles or failures.

  • Focus on the Bigger Picture

Remember that your beginning is part of a larger, divine plan. God has a purpose for you, and you can trust He is at work behind the scenes. Keep your eyes on the prize, and remember that your efforts contribute to the greater good.

  • Seek Support and Encouragement

Surround yourself with a community of like-minded individuals who can offer support and encouragement. Sharing your struggles with fellow entrepreneurs can provide perspective, boost morale, and remind you that you’re not alone. Their experiences and insights can offer valuable encouragement and advice. If you are in Omaha, NE, there is a Facebook community we’d love for you to be a part of. • Stay Committed to Your “Why”

Maintain a clear vision of your goals and stay committed to them, especially when business feels stagnant. Reflecting on the reasons why you started your entrepreneurial journey in the first place can fuel your perseverance. The impact of your work often extends beyond what you can immediately see, and you never know when the breakthrough will happen!

Moving Forward with Confidence I encourage you to embrace the process of growth with gratitude. We aren’t all called to be entrepreneurs, so if you were, you must know that God has equipped you with everything you need to succeed. He is guiding you where you are today, so adopt an attitude of expectancy!

In Philippians 1:6 (ESV), Paul writes, “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Be encouraged because God is faithful in completing the work He begins in us, even if the current stage feels slow-going. Everything you experience is valuable, for your good, and He is using it all.

I hope you will approach each day with confidence and a sense of purpose. Remain open to His guidance and provision as you go step-by-step toward your potential. Each day, you are closer to realizing your dreams and fulfilling your calling, so cherish the moment, exactly where you are, and hold fast to the truth that God delights in your small beginnings. The Bible tells me so.
